About this generator maintenance checklist

Made for standby generator service visits: engine fluids and filters, battery and charger, transfer switch test and a run test with voltage, frequency and hour meter readings.

Questions

What should be checked on a standby generator?

Fluid levels and leaks, belts and hoses, air filter, fuel, battery and charger, control panel set to AUTO, transfer switch operation, and a run test with voltage, frequency and hours recorded.

How often should a standby generator be exercised?

Many manufacturers recommend a short exercise run weekly or every two weeks. Emergency power systems covered by NFPA 110 have their own weekly inspection and monthly test rules.

Does this work for portable generators?

Yes. Remove the transfer switch, block heater and enclosure items and add any items from the owner manual.
